F.W. Mayor Jim Ferrell probably dreams of being a being a big city mayor, thus his big tax (and likely to get bigger) "Performing Arts," etc., policies are trying to turn Federal Way into another Portland, Oregon (ooh, they're so cool that they call it "Rip City"), if not Seattle South, but I think the majority of Federal Way residents are content, for the forseeable future, with being a medium-sized city of about 90 to 110 thousand residents, and therefore there is discontent with all the zoning for new rental housing (before the so-called moratorium) and, maybe, new housing in general. I said in the last council campaign that our growth should be left relatively intact, and implied that Federal Way has no interest in being a big city.
If Ferrell wants to be a big city mayor, then perhaps he should consider moving to Seattle, or joining the disgraced former King County Elections Director, Dean Logan, in Los Angeles. The F.W. government needs to help present homeowners and renters make this city an oasis from the turmoil that much larger cities inevitably -- by definition -- contend with, as our present regional urban centers, Seattle and Tacoma, and even "Rip City," are close enough that we can enjoy the greater urban amenities if we want to, and keep Federal Way uniquely great on our own terms.
