Primary Runner-ups Have Won General Elections in Washington

To deflate any cynicism that comes up anywhere about the ability of 2nd place finishers in primaries to win General Elections, it has happened a number of times in Washington since the institution of the "Top 2" Primary system, here (and probably before that in local jurisdictions that essentially had the same system before it became omnipresent).  Right now, Sonny Putter comes to mind, who finished 2nd for Newcastle City Council in 2007, and then won the General Election.  There have been at least several others as well, including current U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse from the 4th Congressional District, who finished 2nd in the 2014 Primary.   Second place is a victory for me considering the circumstances of this grassroots campaign only spending approximately $500 for this election so far, and having an insurgent candidacy not particularly welcomed by the Establishment.  Appointed Councilwoman Lydia Assefa-Dawson will not be easy to defeat, but the outcome of the November 3rd General Election is hardly certain.
