5th Feedback From the People

Signing up volunteers did not make any gains in the last several days, so if you're a potential volunteer, contact me as soon as possible, preferably through e-mail or phone.  I will be holding another meeting for volunteers in early May.  Remember, YOU decide whether you want to work anywhere from an hour-per-month to a few hours per week.  Some work can also be done from your own home through your own phone or computer if you prefer not to work outdoors.

  • One man who works in the social services field said or implied that certain government agencies need more accountability or reforms when it comes to making crucial decisions and implementing policy.  Though, his comments were focused more on the state than the city, they could be generalized as a guidepost for both.
  • Electronic traffic monitoring came up again as a problem in Federal Way, this time not particularly red-light cameras, but electronic cameras/monitors that allegedly spot traffic speeds.  A woman suggested that they were not precise in recording the official time of day, and probably ticketing motorists inconsistently, arbitrarily and incorrectly.  According to her, the monitoring system in at least one area of her neighborhood is not really addressing the problem that it's alleged to be fixing.  Traffic, generally, seems to be one of the most consistently spoken about concerns of FW citizens that I have heard during the campaign so far.
  • Another woman on the campaign trail spoke about education.  She seemed to suggest that government is not doing all that it could to support education, generally.  [My comment for this post: Though funding is important and crucial in education, funding has to be balanced by earnestness and involvement, by all parties, in achievement goals.]

One of the most important jobs of a politician is to listen to what their constituents, or the people that may elect them to office, are saying, and listening, generally, instead of pontificating on their own ideas and polishing up their speeches.  So I have been listening.  Keep in mind that these points are coming directly from the people of Federal Way, and that I may or may not agree with particular points, here, but I do realize that if I'm elected to the Council, my job is to represent what the majority of the people want, and sometimes to persuade and vote from my own point of view if there is a fairly close divide amongst the people.  My apology if I didn't list something that you told me, but Feedback from the People is going basically by recollection right now as I didn't write down anything, though hoping to be more comprehensive as time goes by.
