My lone opponent, so far, in this year's state representative election, Kristine Reeves, likes to talk about veterans, although leaving aside the tremendous amount of money she makes in her non-legislative career in helping them; but I am a veteran and nobody will surpass me in putting veterans' issues on the legislative agenda if I'm elected.
My Marine career started at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, where I was stationed in the latter months of 1972. Staff Sgt. Davila was our recruit platoon leader. The aforementioned and following rank and names are all coming from my memory, so my apology for mistakes in spelling, if any, and maybe a grade off in remembering a Marine's rank at the particular time referred to (my active duty service from 1972 - 1974).
Soon after graduating from "boot camp," I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California for a short temporary stint, but soon transferred to the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, California (near Santa Ana) from '73 - '74. I was assigned to H & HS Squadron, and worked with Marines at the headquarters. A few of the surnames: Lt. Vogler; Gunnery Sgt. Greenhagen; Staff Sgt. Corbett; Sgt. Darek; Sgt. Ball; Sgt. Norfolk; Cpl. Goss; Cpl. Ivey; Cpl. Wickstrom; Cpl. Marquez; Cpl. Couillard; and me (Cpl). I took a little leeway with the Cpl. rank, which could mean either Corporal (E-4) or Lance Corporal (E-3), as all of the Marines named above probably attained E-4, as I did, or higher, but possibly not at the same time while I was serving with them. My memory is good, but not that good.
My Marine active duty career was only 2 years, as I signed an enlistment contract for 2 years of active duty about a month-or-so before I went to boot camp. I chose not to re-enlist.
